Project Pheonix: Green Gateshead
This a project by the amazing Funky Pheonixes- a group of talented young volunteers I am part of! We have been organising climate action projects for 4 years. This project is an eco-friendly competition across primary schools in Gateshead designed to educate children about climate action and hopefully unite them with their community and their local environment. Teams of primary-aged children will be given tasks to complete in their local schools which could include bringing re-usable water bottles into school, planting wildflower seeds and organising litter picks. Tasks will earn points, and the teams with the most points at the end of the competition will win prizes.
We have done this project as part of our work on the Gateshead Youth Assembly, and as the project commences in January 2026, posts about this project can be found on the Gateshead Youth Assembly Instagram.

What we believe:
We believe that, although the climate crisis has been caused by the irresponsibility of big business and the failure of government to act, we as individuals can reconnect with out local environment, creating solidarity amid this crisis. In addition, engaging in climate action empowers young people, giving them more agency. Being eco-friendly in daily life shouldn't be costly and restricted to the middle class who can afford the time and resources to commit to environmentalism. We want to teach kids that anyone can make eco-friendly choices that save money and help save the planet.

KEY
We wouldn't have been able to do this project, or in fact most of the projects at the Youth Assembly, without the support of the Key. They are an incredible charity based in the North East, empowering young people create better futures. Their Key+ Challenge gives money to groups of young people to do projects that develop their skills. They even wrote an article about our group, which you can find linked below!
